Unveiling Vellalore's Ancient Secrets: A Journey Through Time (2026)

The recent archaeological excavations at Vellalore in Coimbatore have unearthed over 1,000 artifacts in just four months, offering a fascinating glimpse into the region's ancient past. Among the discoveries were a diverse array of items, including shell and glass bangles, iron tools, pottery, beads, spindle whorls, and terracotta hopscotch markers. These findings suggest that Vellalore was a significant trade center, as evidenced by the Roman coins found, which date back to the first century BC to the fourth century AD. This discovery aligns with the historical trade route that connected the western and eastern coasts through places like Vellalore, Sulur, Kathankanni, Kodumanal, Karur, and Uraiyur. The artifacts are believed to span three distinct periods: the first century BC to the third century AD, the fifth century AD to the 10th century AD, and the 12th century AD to the British period. While carbon dating is still pending, the periods were estimated based on comparisons with previously carbon-dated artifacts. The excavation site attracted over 1,500 visitors on Sunday, July 19, 2026, who marveled at the display of these ancient treasures. This discovery highlights the importance of Vellalore as a cultural and economic hub in ancient times, and it raises intriguing questions about the trade networks and interactions between different civilizations in the region. As the excavations continue until October, the team led by Excavation Director K. Suresh will meticulously document these findings, contributing to our understanding of the region's rich historical tapestry.
